To Num. 28:19   LESHEM (Back to article)

Raymond Albert Bowman, professor at the Oriental Language Institute of the University of Chicago, whose unworthy pupil I am, is known for his exhaustive research; “when he made research, he scratched out the drawer.” From his studies of Precious Stones of the Old Testament I here quote his notes on léšem  לשם

The etymology of léšem is entirely uncertain. It is probably a loanword. Hommel (AHT p. 283) suggests Egyptian nšm as a possibility.

Versions LXX: ligúrion; Vulgate : ligurius ; Josephus (Antiq. I5): ligure (for Exodus); Peshitta: qânkěnûn = reddish amber (for Exodus) . . .

Identification

Greek and Latin translators agree that Hebrew léšem is to be identified with ligúrion (spelled variously lyncúrion, lyngoúrion, langúrium, lingúrion, liggúrion, ligúrion, and ligure), as enigmatic léšem . . . .

Theophrastus (sect. 28) describes ligúrion as “very transparent” and electrostatic, having “the power of attraction, just as amber has.” . . .

Strabo (IV, vi, 2) in discussing ligúria (north of Genoa, at the sea, east of the curl of the maritime Alps) states, “the liggúrion, too, is plentiful in their country, and some call this ‘amber’.” Other ancients also identify it as such (Dioscorices 2:100 [Wellmann ed. II, 81, 3]; Pliny, NH 37:52-53; and Demostratus in Pliny, NH 37:ll,2). Caley and Richards (p. 117) declare, “The various statements of Theophrastus in sections 28 and 29 are certainly the earliest account of the properties of amber” and (p. 113) “... lyngourion can be identified with reasonable certainty as either amber or some particular variety of amber.”

Strabo’s reference to ligúrion in the province of Liguria (IV, vi, 2) is probably a reference to the area as a trade territory through which the ligúrion became accessible. According to W. W. Hyde (Roman Alpine Routes, pp. 42-43, 134), amber was brought from the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas by trade routes through Gaul, and the Ligurians acted only as traders in the product. W. Ridgeway (EB col. 135) claims that the red variety is found “both in the south of Europe (Catania; Reggio) and in Lebanon.” Olmstead (Palestine, p. 2) mentions “a poor variety of amber in Central Syria. And Ridgeway (p. 136) says, “As the Phoenicians had red amber thus at his very door, he may early have learned to employ it for purposes of art and ornament ... moreover, red-amber is, as stated above, also to be found in Sicily, and may have been procured thence.” Amber beads reached Mycenae and Tiryns in the bronze age and may even have reached Palestine. Perrot Chipiez (Art Chald. II, 362) state that as late as the beginning of the twentieth century, no trace of amber had been found in Mesopotamia, but later Olmstead (Assyria, p. 572) lists amber among the media used for making richly-carved cylinder seals.

In the light of such evidence, it seems best, with RV mg. at Ex. 28:19, to identify léšem  with reddish-amber.

Sequence of tribes with Judah first: Numbers 2:3-31 and 7:12-83 and 10:14-28 agree together (with the one exception of Num. 2:17 adding Levi as the 7th in the midst, and Ephraim therefore as the 8th). 1 Chronicles 12:24-37 has Ephraim as the 5th.

The Names of GOD, and the notes to them, are listet in the order of the books of the Hebrew Bible, where they occur (: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles. )

The books of the New Covenant are in the same order as in the King James Version.

To Gen. 17:1   El Shadday (Back to article)

שׁדּי אל El Shadday, which is mentioned 31 times in the poetic section of the Hebrew Book of Job, as well as in the prophecy of the non-Jewish Bileam (Num. 24:4, 16), is also invoked in a Thamudian inscription from Tema (Jsa 255. Van den Branden, Les inscriptiones thamoudéennes, 1950, 347). The Thamudian spelling שׁדי אל suggests that Shadday is related to the Arabic root šdd “to be strong,” which is used both in Thamudian and in classical Arabic — cf. class. Arabic šadîd “strong, powerful, forceful; vigorous,” — to which the adjectival ending -ăy was added to form a proper name.
